Public Wi-Fi and your devices when you travel
How to stay safe when you're away or on a network you don't know
When you’re away — at a hotel, at the airport, in a café — your phone and laptop are more exposed: networks you don’t know, someone else’s charging point, commotion around you. The good news is you don’t need anything complicated to stay safe. A few simple habits make almost all the difference.
Rules for the road
- On public Wi-Fi (hotel, airport), avoid logging into your bank or making payments. If you really have to, use your phone's internet (mobile data) instead.
- Don't charge your phone straight from a public USB port (airport, train) — it can be tampered with. Use a normal power socket with your own charger, or a power bank.
- Keep your phone and laptop locked with a code or fingerprint and don't leave them unattended.
- Turn on “find my device” (Find My / Find My Phone), so you can lock or wipe it remotely if you lose it.
