Urgent — act now

I lost my phone or it was stolen. What do I do?

First, breathe. The most valuable thing in your phone isn’t the phone itself, but what someone can open with it: your accounts. That’s why the order matters — first you lock it remotely and stop the SIM card, then you secure your accounts. A phone can be replaced; an emptied account is harder to recover.

First steps, right now

  1. From another device (another phone, a computer), go to "Find My Device": on iPhone it's "Find My", on Android it's Google's "Find My Device". You can see where it is, make it ring, lock it or wipe it remotely.
  2. Lock it remotely and display a message on the screen with a contact number. If it's clearly gone for good or stolen, you can choose to wipe it remotely.
  3. Call your mobile operator and ask them to block the SIM card — so nobody can use your number to receive codes.
  4. From another device, change the passwords for your important accounts (email, bank, social media) and check your "second step" (2FA).
  5. Notify your bank if you had payment apps or cards saved on the phone.
  6. File a report with the Police (Poliția Română), especially if it was stolen (you may need it for your operator or insurance).

What NOT to do

  • Don't go to recover it on your own if "Find My" shows a location — notify the police.
  • Don't leave the SIM card active: if it stays on, someone can receive your codes by SMS.
  • Don't put off changing your passwords — they matter more than the phone itself.

How to spot it next time

  • Did you turn on "Find My Device" ahead of time? If not, turn it on now on the phones you still have — it will save you next time.
  • Is your screen locked with a code or fingerprint? Without it, whoever finds the phone has access to everything.
  • Do you have a backup of your photos and contacts? That way you don't lose them along with the phone.

This guide is meant to help you act fast. It does not replace official instructions from your bank, the police or the authorities. When in doubt, call the numbers above.
